An unflinching look at Thailand's underground world of child boxers - of which there are over 30,000 - BUFFALO GIRLS tells the story of two 8 year-old girls who are professional Muay Thai prizefighters. Set in small villages throughout rural Thailand, the film chronicles these young girls' journey, one that is alternately empowering and heartbreaking, as they fight in small neighborhood arenas in order to win prize-money to help provide for their families. After many months of rigorous training and a grueling schedule of fights, Stam and Pet must ultimately fight each other for the 20 Kilo championship belt of Thailand. Review For Buffalo Girls

It's difficult to say if Kellstein's approach to these difficult cultural dilemmas is meant to leave the audience to decide for themselves or if he can't figure it out either.
Mark Olsen-Los Angeles Times

Stam, Pet and their families don't seem to think much about what they're doing. Neither does Buffalo Girls.
Mark Jenkins-NPR

Tthe burning question of child safety and long-term physical effects of fists-and-feet Muay Thai boxing is all but absent.
Richard Kuipers-Variety

Buffalo Girls hews close to the experience at hand, which sometimes feels a little too much like a normal leading-up-to-the-big-game Undefeated-style sports doc.
Michael Atkinson-Village Voice

A story that, though sickly fascinating, is as crudely rendered as its images.
Jeannette Catsoulis-New York Times

A surprising and sad glimpse into an unusual and heretofore largely unknown subculture, but one that feels frustratingly aimless.
Brent Simon-Shared Darkness

Kellstein gives viewers more or less the same show that the fans and gamblers get.
Noel Murray-AV Club

The audience has been delighted to spend some time with a couple of remarkable young ladies.
Scott Wold-Paste Magazine

Todd Kellstein doesn't allow you to entirely indulge convenient (though understandable and perhaps irresistible) armchair outrage.
Ed Gonzalez-Slant Magazine
